HOW DO I REQUEST AN INTERNSHIP?

SDA highly suggests using the steps and tools given in class;

  1.  E-mail your intership resume to the clinic you have selected. (We suggest sending it in PDF format.)
  2. Within 24-48 hours e-mail your "Thank you letter." Thank them for taking the time to consider you for an internship opportunity.
  3. If you do not hear back with in 2-3 business days, you may follow up with a call.

Tip: We highly recommend not showing up to a clinic without an appointment and expect to be able to speak to someone. It can be very hard for a busy office to make time for your unexpected visit. DON'T be an inconvenience. You can however, make a quick stop and drop off your resume. Once again, dental managers  and dentist like e-mails!

Tip: If you have an interview appointment, be on time! No shows and tardiness will impact you reputation in a negative way. This will make it hard to find internship opportunity and even a job!

WHERE CAN I APPLY FOR AN INTERNSHIP?

  • Start with your dentist!! Dentist love hearing one of their patients is becoming a dental assistant. You will almost never hear "no"!
  • The next best place is applying for an intership (not a job) at an office who is looking to hire a dental assistant. Mention that you will volunteer your time to help with sterilization and such until they hire someone. And at the same time you will fulfill some of your hours. Many of our hardworking students have been offered a permanent position where they fulfill their intership hours! That can be you!
  • Apply for an internship with one of the offices listed on your "Internship contact list."

Tip: Remember that obtaining an internship opportunity is a privilege. Be appreciative, responsible, reliable, take initiative, and treat it like a job!
